Artist Books are a wonderfully diverse genre and my work is much the same. I'm fascinated by structures and boxes, both traditional and invented. Most of the books included here have some unique sculptural or spacial element to them.

Distressed Wooden Boards // August 24 and 26, 2019

from $0.00

Workshop Date: August 26th, 2017 and evening course on August 24th
Workshop Location: 1890 Bryant Street
Workshop Cost: $190 Materials included

Description: This unique invented binding combines both the structural and the decorative using unconventional materials. Layers, color, and depth play a key role in the unique painted board covers, and the sewing supports are referential to historical bindings with an artistic variation. In this two-day workshop, students will explore the possibilities of combining hand-painted wooden boards, non-adhesive binding, closures and sewing support to create one of a kind bindings of their own. The structure has many applications that can give students ideas and inspiration about how to take this book to the next level in their artist book practice.

Materials provided for instruction: All workshop materials will be provided by instructor.
Laminated wooden boards, several colors of milk paint, sealants, waxed linen thread, decorative endsheet papers, sewing support materials (leather, suede, rubber, fabric, etc. ), interior textblock paper, and closure materials (bone, found objects and traditional closures), sandpaper (multi grit kit for each student), adhesives, disposable sanding masks.

Tools provided for students: Apron, mechanical pencil, scissors, xacto or snap blade knife, awl, bone folder, 45-degree triangle (3-6”), ruler, cutting mat.

Basic bookbinding experience is needed for this class; sewing of multiple signatures and gluing with a working knowledge of measuring and cutting.  A basic bookbinding skill set will allow students to focus on the creative aspects of the binding and hand painting elements. Please inquire if you are unsure about your skill level for the course.
