Artist Books are a wonderfully diverse genre and my work is much the same. I'm fascinated by structures and boxes, both traditional and invented. Most of the books included here have some unique sculptural or spacial element to them.

The Altered Book Show/Silent Auction includes over 100 Bay Area Artists who use discarded books to create unique “book art objects.” The bookworks are offered in a Silent Auction for five weeks, closing with a Live Auction where they are auctioned off to the highest bidder.

Illustrators continue one of the oldest human traditions: making
story-telling pictures. Both prehistoric images painted on cave walls and medieval illuminated manuscripts show the work of the human hand, but we live in a different world. The invention of printing and advances in
reproduction techniques bring us images that are less handmade, and computer programs can generate images on their own. The fact that a person actually made the pictures we see is less and less obvious.
Paradoxically, pictures have become increasingly powerful and pervasive in our interconnected world. Books, offering a sustained engagement and physical experience electronic media can’t give, are printed more than ever before. In graphic novels and manga, illustration becomes more important than text. We live in a visual age where pictures constantly bridge cultural borders.

Exploding the Codex explores information and presentation: in our lifetime, we have seen an incredible change in the way information is presented. As information becomes digitized, our relationship to information and access is evolving. The form of information is a large part of how we interpret the story. Despite the proliferation of digital information, there will always be room in our lives for theater, and for the privacy of the printed word and the luxury of paper between our fingertips. Books are monuments to consciousness and begin collective conversations that evolve our culture and our perception of ourselves in the world. As the Codex explodes so does our perception of our place in the world.

The San Diego Book Arts will hold their Third National Juried Exhibition of works of art in book form at UC San Diego’s Geisel Library from May 29 to July 4, 2010. The exhibition, which is co-sponsored by UCSD’s Mandeville Special Collections Library, will feature more than 60 works of art, ranging from limited edition fine press books and mixed media art objects to silkscreen and woodcut works that take their creative cue from the book format.
